I think these books are more attractive to females who enjoy the relationship between the main character and Bella. The books did not do anything for me as I found it immature, and I like my vampires nastier/sexier (more like Vampire Lestat)

Because they're 13-year-old girls. For the same reason they like Backstreet Boys and and NSync and Big Bang and Mika--the primary audience is young teen girls who are just starting to understand what sexual tension is. Twilight and boy bands and such things offer safe, non-committal avenues for exploration.
