Opening Youtube embeds in their own window

Is there a way to open an embedded Youtube video in a new window/tab without playing it first?

You used to be able to click anywhere on the preview image of an embedded Youtube video to open the Youtube page for that video in a new window. Clicking the play button would play the embedded version.

Youtube changed the embedded player a while ago so that no matter where you click, the embedded player would always start playing. Clicking on the video again would open it in a new window, but the embedded player still wastes bandwidth downloading in the background.

Is there a way to get something like the old behavior back?

Best answer: You using Firefox? If so, install Greasemonkey and use this script.

Response by poster: I don't think it was there when I posed this question, but hovering on the Youtube logo at the bottom right corner of an embed shows a "watch on Youtube" caption. Clicking on it opens the video in a new window.

Best answer: Clicking the Youtube logo doesn't work anymore. Now you have to hover over the bottom right button, click the menu icon, and then click the Youtube logo in the top left.
