I've briefly tested a friend's "NASA bed" and found it extremely uncomfortable. The foam is dense and reflects way too much heat -- which I consider bad -- and I felt as though I was upside down. Unless your legs are especially heavy, your upper body seems likely to sog further into the foam and leave your legs feeling elevated.

I've slept on harder, less fancy foam before, and I found it somewhat more comfortable. Foam's still really obnoxious for those of us who hate its insulating properties, though. Keep that in mind before you spring for foam-based bedding.

Embroidering a bit on majick's comments- I have a Tempurpedic mattress pad (it's about 2 1/2 inches thick and lays on top of my regular mattress) and I've found that the heat issue can be mitigated with jersey knit sheets.

It can still get too warm, but I've noticed that's mostly in spring and autumn when I turn on the heater because it's supposed to get cold at night and then it doesn't.

I've never tried a full foam bed, but I do like the mattress pads- and they're much, much less expensive than the full bed. (I think I paid 149 dollars for mine.)

I gave up my Tempurpedic pillow cause it was too warm. I have two friends who tried to return the Tempurpedic mattress and both accrued involved and messy tales of failure.

I like the tempurpedic pillows mucho, but the mattress that was foisted upon me by my Ex-, not at all! It's too restraining, not romantic, and expensive. On the other hand, I'm very happy with the $300 futon mattress on my platform bed--just need to replace it every five years or so, but so what?

PS: I've never liked the bouncy/transmission of motion aspect of conventional mattresses, so....

Based on a recommendation in yet another AskMe question I just bought a Sensus 3-inch thick high-density 5lb. visco-elastic memory foam mattress topper from these guys and It Has Changed My Life. Well, it's dramatically improved my sleeping, in any event, and that's pretty important for life quality. Two caveats: 1) Spouse's reaction is 'meh' - no better or worse than our old mattress. 2) It's late autumn and we keep our bedroom cool. Whether I'll be as happy in the summer, we'll see. But right now I'm a major fan of visco-elastic mattresses.
