What the heck do we do now?

Night in San Francisco, now what?

My husband and I are in San Francisco for the weekend and we are unsure what to do for the rest of the night.

Neither of us drink and my husband has sprained his ankle, so it can't be anything too taxing. But he's a trooper.

We are just finishing up dinner in North Beach and have no idea where to go from here. Bonus points if it extra fun for nerdy folks who would turn to Metafilter for something like this.

You have a car? If it's a clear night, drive up to Twin Peaks. Great view.

Response by poster: No car. Just a Muni pass.

8:30-9:30 tonight is "earth hour", there's a bunch of things going on when they turn out the lights, Ferry building has some thing going on etc...

Watch Coit tower turn off in 5 minutes (I think)

Get down to the Ferry Building and the (fairly safe at night) pier and watch the bay go by and the bay brige at night, esp. on a night like tonight, it would be worth the entire trip to San Francisco. It's maybe a 200" walk from the F market on MArket street or the ferry building.

There are other piers as well that are lit up more, but you'll be fine anywhere.

There is the Musuem Mechanique (sp?) at Fishman's wharf which might be open at this time of night.

The cable cars are always great.

There's the City Lights bookstore right in north beach, really famous and pretty good.

Oh, take a cab up and down from Twin Peaks, it would be worth the money! (maybe $20 there, $20 back, $10 to wait while you take in the view)

Nerdy? Do you like bookstores and bubble tea? Take the 9X or another bus down to California St and take the 1 over to Green Apple books on Clement. It's a fairly long ride, but you'll get to see the whole cross-section of SF through the Tenderloin, Pac Heights, Parkside, into the "residential" Richmond area. That section of the Richmond district is a whole different world than most tourists see, which is something I like to see in new cities (think: Bastille area of Paris, a little working class with plenty of neighborhood places to do things at). Get some bubble tea and walk a few blocks, then stop into Green Apple Books to take in one of my favorite book sellers in the city.

That's what I do, I'm telling you about it on MetaFilter on a Saturday night, and I'm a nerd.

(Not to say that the piers and wharfs wouldn't be spectacular on their own merit on a night like this, just throwing a curveball out there..)
