Suggest other string-only compositions like The Cinematic Orchestra's "Prelude" ?

You can stream it on Dizzler or Grooveshark.

Whenever I hear this song, it feels like I've just lost a loved one. Also feels as if it's snowing outside.

Classical preferred. No vocals or drums please.

Max Richter's compositions tend to have a similar melancholic feel, for example the opening string piece on Henry May Long.

My suggestions here apply for this question too.

There are too many string-only chamber music pieces to list, so I'll post a few of the most sublime string orchestra compositions ever created (IMHO)

Vaughn Williams' "Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis"

Tchaikovsky's string serenade

Elgar's "Nimrod" from the Enigma Variations

I think I have to list Yo Yo Ma playing Bach's cello suits (prelude linked here)

Check out some of these:

- Soundtrack to Wings of Desire
- Eluvium
- Rachels
- Dustn O'Halloran (mostly piano but similar feel)

If any of those appeal, MFmail me and I can dig for more.

Oh, I have to post Dvorak's "American" quartet (mvmt 1) and mvmt 4. Mmmmm.
