Looking for leather in NYC

I'd like to buy some leather that's suitable for tooling in NYC. I'm looking for vegetable tanned leather at least 3 or 4 mm in thickness and at least 2 square feet in area. I'd also like to look at it before buying it, so internet-based retailers aren't what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for personal recommendations, and I'm capable of looking in a phone book, so "call around" isn't the answer I'm looking for.

There's a tannery in Montgomery NY (one of the last in the US they say, though I'm sure they just mean the parchment business). It's near Newburgh / Beacon. I'm sure some people in fashion in the city will have a way to help you in the city proper. But maybe you're looking for a cool day trip.
