Patellar tracking correction: Knee strap or brace? Which brand is best? posted by dame to health & fitness (4 comments total)
The physical therapist I saw symptoms associated with patellar tracking problems would tape me up with Kinesio Tape, which was like the most amazing feeling thing my poor ill-tracked knee had felt in years. I don't know if I would be able to apply the tape correctly myself, though. Plus it looked way dorky.
I actually asked if there was a brace or strap that I could buy and wear that would do the same thing as the K-tape and she said there was really nothing brace or strap-wise that would be useful. So it might be worth it to get a physical therapy evaluation or make an appointment with an orthopedist so see if s/he has any suggestions for your specific condition. If you get the wrong thing, you could worsen the condition. posted by jennyb at 3:58 PM on March 11

I went to PT for (a type of) this years ago. In my case, the problem was that a muscle on the inner side of my thigh attaching to the kneecap was weaker than it should have been, so it allowed it to slide outward a bit. They gave me what amounted to a big, floppy rubber band; I was supposed to place this under the leg of a heavy piece of furniture and use it for resistance as I moved the affected leg in a certain direction (while straightened). Of course, I've forgotten which direction.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure I asked if there was a brace or something I could use in the short term or during exercise, and they did not recommend one. It seems like in some cases support could allow a muscle to weaken further, worsening the condition. But I'll be keeping an eye on this thread! posted by ecsh at 5:04 PM on March 11
My PT basically said, "Different things work for different people; go crazy." So I have the go ahead to mess around; just thought I'd see if people had things they loved. Sorry to not be more specific in the question. posted by dame at 6:18 PM on March 11
