Going from Philly to Cleveland. I have my reasons...

I don't have a car. Help me get from Philadelphia to Cleveland, and back, this August on the cheap.

I'm going to Cleveland the last weekend of August for DEVOtional 2009. Last year, I bummed a ride out with the guy who drums for the DEVO Tribute band who perfoms, but I'd like to get out there my own way this year. I'd also like to avoid Greyhound if possible: I had a rather bad experience taking it back home from Cleveland.

What are my options for <$150 each way, and how early should I be booking?

Orbitz shows several nonstop flights for right around $300. Is that too close to your limit?

Post a wanted ad on the Philly and Cleveland Craigslists. I'm sure there are other DEVO fans who are planning to go who would like the company during the long drive.

Best answer: It looks like AmTrak services Philly to Cleveland for about $87 going and $56 returning. That's a lot cheaper than flying, but AmTrak's notorious for not sticking to their schedule.

Enterprise rental has weekend specials that do me good.

Booking a compact for the last weekend of March (Friday AM thru Monday AM) shows $70 *total* for the weekend, plus ~$60 for their damage waiver and liability insurance.

Their fine print says:

UNLIMITED MILEAGE EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. ANY RENTALS PAST THE MISSISSIPPI OR INTO CANADA RECEIVES 200 MILES PER DAY AND .20 PER EACH ADDITIONAL MILE.

This assumes you are 25, which, looking at your profile, I see you are!

Response by poster: I, uh, also lack a license.

Could you get a driver's license before August?

Seeing this trip would be about 440 miles, tack on $60-80 for gas, if you're thinking of renting a car, and that might be low. AmTrak looks like a fantastic option, if you won't have issues getting to and from the stations.

Car pooling with others seems to be the cheapest way to go. Even if you don't have a license. Websites like iCarpool are free to join. You can post
a ride wanted ad and see what you get.
Also checkout the Craigslist "rideshare" section or place a ride wanted ad.
