He is bedridden for a few months so I want something that will occupy his time.

Information that might help: He is a 19 year old male

Economics Major

I am looking to spend around 100$

Gifts i liked but couldn't afford were the Kindle and the korg kaossilator

Best answer: Are there any other friends of yours who could help contribute? I just joined with a bunch of other people to get a Kindle for a friend.

Same with a Nintendo DS.

It would be nice for him to get out of bed with a new skill.

What about a book of magic tricks (and some of the equipment)? Has he ever expressed any interest in learning a language? A few language CDs might seem like a lame gift but you never know.

The new Starting Strength DVD by Rippetoe?

A great, guaranteed-to-be-addictive TV series (or as many seasons as fits your budget) on DVD?

A subscription to a rental video website that lets you download your movie "rentals".

You could do a lot of knitting in a few months, if you think he could be into that. (Oh, hush, dissenters, I've seen guys at Stitch 'n' Bitches!)

(Following from turgid dahlia's idea:) A subscription to Chinese Pod, if he'd be up for learning a language.

A cheap guitar and a learn-to-play book.

Give him an indulgence -- a lei. There are several lei suppliers in Hawaii that ship to the mainland. Leis can be manly, make everyone feel sensual and refreshed. When the flowers begin to fade, toss the lei around the bedpost and let the aroma fill the room for a week! And don't expect your friend will spend all his time in bed. Likely as not, he'll be doing cardiac rehab to restore the muscle. So, maybe a pedometer? An i-pod loaded with marching music?

You could probably get a used DS for just under $100.

Lots of books? Cheap MP3 player? If he has a laptop, maybe some games? A headset to let him Skype his friends?

Best answer: The Laptop Laidback is a great way to use a computer while in bed... We love ours! And it costs about $100 on Amazon.com...
