How to find out what cellphone carriers my friends have (without asking them)?

Is there a website where I could input known cellphone numbers and know what carriers they are registered with?
Apart from calling all of my contacts and asking them, I'd like to know who they have their service with. Now that my carrier (Alltel) is part of the Verizon network, I don't want to duplicate the MYCIRCLE numbers I have because Verizon would automatically be covered.

You could email them texts (##########@txt.att.net, ##########@tmomail.net, ##########@vtext.com, etc.) and eliminate those carriers that bounce back.

One challenge is number portability, so it would have to be determined on an individual basis. My cell number is on its third carrier - vacapinta's link gives me the original carrier, not the present carrier.

Don't do this. Most people in the US have to pay for text messages they receive.

The wireless amber alerts page does a really good job of this. Just fill in the number, hit submit, and it will tell you what carrier the number is with (I have a ported number and it knows who I'm really with). You have to confirm the sign-up so you won't actually be signing anybody up for anything.

Worth a shot though.
