San Francisco filter: I'm going to be there in two weeks, and am looking for advice on getting a single ticket to see Wicked at the Orpheum -- get them ahead, or try and get them that evening? Any advantages/experiences with the show, the venue...?

Caveat: I want a reasonably decent seat. Not interested in the nosebleeds. Price is always an issue, but I'm not averse to paying for a good seat.

(Also, if you have any suggestions for cool things to do evenings in SF from the 22nd to the 28th of Feb, I'm all ears, too....)

Well, if all else fails, they do a lottery for seats 2.5 hours before the show. They should be front-row seats...they were in NY and Chicago, at least. We got tickets that way in NY and it was cool being in the front row but it's hard to see the whole stage.

For suggestions for cool things to do, the Fox Theatre in Oakland just reopened after a huge remodeling project. It's a fairly short Bart ride from San Francisco (the Fox Theatre is around the corner from the 19th Street Bart station in Oakland). The theatre is gorgeous and it looks like they've got shows on Feb 22nd and Feb 28th.

If you're staying in a decent hotel, try calling/writing the concierge now. They often have connections to ticket brokers or sometimes even tickets held in reserve. You may well be paying through the nose, but it's worth a shot. Stubhub has pricey tickets too.

Just to give you warning: My mom was calling there last week for tickets for March, and she could only get tickets for June. She was trying to get multiple tickets, though, so I can't speak for singles.

Just to close this out, Wicked was, well, wicked. I ordered from Ticket-rape-master, but got an unbelievably-great seat, 12 rows back, six from the center, two weeks before.
