The back of the cover of the book says "Cover Illustration by: Serino Coyne, Inc." And here's the website I found when Googling that name.

I am almost positive this is discussed in the last episode of PBS's Broadway: The American Musical. It goes into a lot of detail about the making of Wicked, and I think I remember a specific discussion of the striking logo (sorry I just can't remember the designer!). You can find out here when your local affiliate will be showing the series next.

Broadway: The American Musical is available on DVD (including from Netflix) too. Discussion of the poster sounds familiar.
