What is this FLAMES logo from?

I bought a sweater at a thrift store with a flame logo on it and the word "FLAMES" under the logo (Photo). The sweater was made by Champion, so I'm thinking it's a sports team logo. The only Flames team anyone seems to know is the Calgary Flames, and this doesn't appear to be their logo. What did the logo come from?

Hard to tell from the picture, but that doesn't look like commercially made stitching-- letters and border seem to be quite uneven. Are you sure this isn't something that a previous owner added? You could do that design reasonably easily on a standard-issue home sewing machine. Can you post a picture of the back side of the stitching?

Here's someone who was selling a sweater with the same logo. Maybe you could ask them what it was or where they got it.

You might try looking at sportslogos.net. A quick search turned up a script logo from the Calgary Flames and the logo of the UIC sports teams. My money would be on the second one.

It could also be an old version of the Liberty Flames' logo - the sports teams from Liberty University of Jerry Falwell fame.

Well, it doesn't look like the Atlanta Flames logo (yes, Atlanta had an ice hockey team.)

UIC (University of Illinois - Chicago) Flames?

Doh. Just saw that Johnny Assay already put that forward. My bad.

Definitely UIC...that is an older logo of theirs. Maybe early 90s? I still have one somewhere....

Yeah, its the UIC Flames. BTW the Calgary Flames and Atlanta Flames are the same team and I'm pretty sure Atlanta has a team now too.

Early 90s UIC makes a lot of sense, since I found it in Illinois in the late 90s. Thanks everyone.
