A day at the opera.

The Met in New York is performing the Ring cycle this year, and I'm interested in buying tickets to Götterdämmerung. What's the easiest way to do this?

I've never bought tickets for a performance at the Met. Is there an equivalent to Ticketmaster for opera tickets? Or any convenient website at which I might by tickets? Are discounted tickets available? How far in advance should I make the purchase?

Also, assuming I'll be buying tickets in the mid-to-low price range for a matinee performance, what seats will give me the best bang-for-my-buck in terms of sightlines and accoustics?

You can buy them directly from the Met website. As far as I can tell, you can't buy seats for just one opera, you have to buy seats for all four.

Oh wow. According to the site, it looks like availability for the cheap seats is limited (if available at all). For $300, I would head down to New York just for Götterdämmerung, but it looks like nothing below $1000 is available (maybe single cheap seats?)

StubHub now or Craigslist in April.

The Met Opera does make discount orchestra tickets available as part of its rush ticket program, but those are available only for performances on Monday through Thursday. You can get standing room tickets for the same day starting at 10 AM. I assume that you can get these for the Ring Cycle.

For Götterdämmerung only, you should be able to buy by contacting Met Opera ticket service directly. 212-362-6000. Not sure what, if any, the discount would be, but you can buy them individually.
