What kind of typewriter ribbon fits a Remington 9?

I don't know really know, well, anything about typewriter ribbon, but I'd like to get some for someone for some holiday. Unfortunately, the model is old and rare, so there isn't much information about it online. I also don't have access to the typewriter, so I can't just pop out the old ribbon spool and bring it in to a store. What kind/size/whatever should I look for?

Is there an old ribbon in it? If so, you could take it with you to an office supply store and see if anything there looks the same.

maybe ask this guy? looks like it's a couple bobbins and inked ribbon inbetween - it may be possible to get just inked ribbon and spool it on the bobbins yourself maybe? (I have a couple old typewriters like that, there's not too much to the ribbons, really.)

An Company called Scantracker sells These spool ribbons for Reminton manual typewriters model #s 7 and 11. maybe they would fit model 9 too. Anyway, you can call them toll-free or email them.

Seconding mrg -- if you have the spools/bobbins, you should be able to buy any typewriter ribbon and re-spool it ---- of course, at the expense of inky fingers.

This page suggests a B61 or B100; this page says the B61 is no longer made but they have B100's.

The overwhelming majority of typewriters made since the late 1800s take 1/2" ribbon, which is still available with a little searching. It's easiest to find in solid black, though bi-color (red and black) and other colors are available from time to time. IMPORTANT: stay away from correcting ribbon, which has a stripe of white-out-like material which will flake off, fall into the mechanical bits, and eventually corrode the machine -- it's nasty stuff.

As others have pointed out, you'll have to rewind the new ribbon onto the old metal spools. Just remember to wear rubber gloves (it's messy) and pay careful attention to how the ribbon winds off the spools and through the vibrator (the part that lifts the ribbon with each keystroke). Whatever you do, don't throw away the original spools -- they simply don't make them like that any more!

As for finding ribbon, old-school office supply stores usually have it, and you can special-order it from places like Office Depot, Staples, and the like. Alternately, if you want to order a lot of ribbon (not necessarily a good idea, since they do dry out over time), check out Ames Supply Co.

Hope this helps!
