Firefox taking over Explorer?

When I type in a url into the address bar in Internet Explorer (v 6.0.29) it automatically opens up the page in Mozilla Firefox (v.5.0) - how can I force the page to just open up in Explorer? (I've scoured preferences to no avail) (Windows XP- home)

Have you made sure that your default browser is set?

If you're still using Firefox .5, now would be a great time to upgrade to 3.0. You might as well uninstall .5 first, as the flat files and registry settings storing preferences are probably incompatible in some regards - in conjunction with aloneinvietnam's suggestion, I think this should solve any issues.

I encountered this same problem with FF2.0 and IE6 (don't ask, had to keep them both installed for compatibility testing). Anyway, in that case, I found this link which proved very helpful in resolving the problem.

However, I have to state that since upgrading to IE7, the problem recurred (once) and was *not* corrected using this solution - but I am now mysteriously able to open links in IE directly again.

You might also consider installing the Firefox extension "IE tab", which allows you to switch the rendering engine at will for certain websites.
