Abstract my wife, please

My good lady wife is looking to get into abstracting and abridging; any pointers?

Background: my wife is a recent library science graduate who is looking for a new job. She's thinking about acquiring skills or looking for a job that involves abstracting or abridging. Does anybody have any specific pointers for how people get started on this area, or any suggestions on how she can get work in this area?
