Are you registered with the embassy? It's always a good thing to do if you're living outside your native country. Helps them with their stats, they know you're there in case there's a natural disaster or other event where you might need their help, and presumably you're in with a chance for invites for special events! posted by different at 8:03 AM on November 6, 2008
As a US citizen living abroad, you should be registered with the US embassy.
With Kenya's recent post election violence, this is especially important.
Getting on the invite list requires you to network and meet a US embassy official, who could then add you to the list.
If you work for an NGO, get to know people at the USAID mission (they're part of the overall American mission, and also report to the Ambassador). posted by BobbyVan at 8:04 AM on November 6, 2008
Definitely register. Beyond that, start dropping by and just talking to whoever's ear you can bend.
I was living in Zambia last 4th of July, and it was on a Friday and I had to work all day. But that night I dropped by the embassy. The gate guards said no one was inside, they were all at the colonel's house. I didn't know who the colonel was but they gave me directions so I headed over there and saw the fireworks as I was getting close (scare the locals much?). Turned out to be a pretty sweet party (open bar) and I met some great people. Particularly fun event when you're living so far from "home."
Also...I'm likely going to be in Nairobi for Thanksgiving with a bunch of friends. Drop me a MeMail if you'd like to join us. posted by allkindsoftime at 9:10 AM on November 6, 2008
