Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but Windows Movie Maker has a screen shot button. Can you save the files in the movie maker format, and then convert them/save them to the format you want with something like media coder or paint shop pro? Or is your original video in Avidemux 2?

Response by poster: CM your solution is pretty protracted. I figured either Avidemux 2 had a screenshot function that I can't figure out from the UI or that someone had written a script for it. Any idea if I'm wrong?

Best answer: I'm not sure why it is not detailed in the documentation but taking screenshots in Avidemux is relatively simple. Perhaps the authors thought it too simple and intuitive to need documenting.
Anyway.
1. Load the video file in Avidemux.
2. Locate the frame you want a screenshot of (using the play, next frame, next keyframe buttons or dragging the slider across the video timeline)
3. Click the File drop-down menu. Choose Save and then click Save JPEG image.

To save a series of screenshots of frames.
1. Load the video file in Avidemux.
2. Locate the starting frame you want a screenshot of ( again using the play, next frame, next keyframe buttons or dragging the slider across the video timeline) then click Selection: start. Then locate the last frame of your desired selection and click Selection: end. You should notice in the bottom right hand corner of the program window that the values of A and B have changed to reflect the frame numbers of your starting and end points of the selection.
3. Click the File drop-down menu. Choose Save and then click Save Selection as JPEG images.
