Second perm in my life - how I do this thing?

I recently had my second perm ever in my life. I bought this liquid from the hair salon that the stylist assured me would not make my hair hard. It turned out to be a half-truth.. Tell me what's better!

What I want:

soft, beautiful curls

What I get:

morning after shower (detangled with a wide-tooth comb, not blow-dried, scrunched in product all over) - stiff, wet-looking curls.

afternoon - not as stiff, still wet-looking curls

evening - regular curls

What's the best product and/or process you use? I have Asian hair by the way. I tried to go without any product twice and ended up with limp undefined waves. I use Pantene shampoo and conditioner for Curls. Thank you in advance!

I have naturally curly hair, and I use the devachan no-poo stuff, but I think what I do should work with any product. I put it on when my hair is really wet, and then don't touch my hair again until it's completely dry. Once it's dry, it's hard and crunchy, and I lean over, flip my hair over and scrunch it until all of the crunch is de-crunched and my hair is soft again.

I have naturally curly hair and I hate hard, crunchy curls. This Aveda product is wonderful, my favorite out of a lifetime's worth of curl products. Also, you can get a sample size to try it out before you spend the cash on the whole shebang. But I just put it in while my hair is wet and let air-dry, run my hands through once after it's dry.

I used to use Nexxus Headdress which gave me the effect you're looking for.

It's a leave in conditioner, so you don't want to condition after washing or it will go too limp.

Basically, if not that, then you want a mousse, not something gel-like, that's what's making it "hard".

I have naturally curly hair, and John Frieda's dream Curls Curl Perfecting Spray is awesome. The only time it ever gets crispy is if I use a whole lot of it on really wet hair. It is also great for dry hair to refreshe curl or tame down frizz toward the end of the day.

I also really like Biolage Gelee'. The way I like it is to use a small amount when my hair is really wet... it dilutes it a little to keep it from getting too crunchy, but styles it really well. Soft curls and great smell... but it is a little pricey.

Veronicacorningstone, we are hair product twins! Weird!

Another naturally curly-haired person. I can vouch for the fabulousness of the John Frieda products; I use the 'Curl Around' conditioner and it's the best conditioner I've tried, ever. I also use the Biolage Gelee, and think it's great. Makes it so that my hair's not crunchy, but shiny and smooth and frizz free. Keep in mind, though: crispyness is sometimes just a matter of using too much gel.

My recommendation to you: put some gel in your palm, add a blob of conditioner, mix them together in your palm, and then apply to your hair like usual. The conditioner makes things shiny and smooth and prevents crispiness, and the gel gives you the control that you want. Give it a shot - you don't even need to buy anything new!

Here's what works for me. I have naturally curly, long, fine hair. Shampoo/conditioner (aussie, infusium is my preference of the drugstore brands). Leave-in conditioner (infusium 23). Gel to defrizz, usually the straightening kinds work best if you let it dry naturally (loreal textureline). Then some light mousse or scrunching hair spray to style lightly. Be sure to deep condition on occasion, especially in the winter (V05 hairdressing stuff is really cheap/easy for this as long as you use it before you shampoo).

I'm a white girl with natural curls, so I don't know to what degree this advice will apply. That said . . .

I maintain my curls by only combing my hair when it has conditioner in it, right beforing rinsing. I squeeze the hair a bit in a towel to get rid of the excess water, then I run any variety of mid-grade gel through it (LA Looks, Garnier, etc) I go light on the gel anywhere above my ears or I'll have flat hair on top. That's it!

Based on your description, it sounds like you need to use a gel with less pop to it, and/or less gel.

2nd scrunching your hair once it's dry to break up the product. I use the Devachan products and the gel does dry hard, but once my hair is dry, I just scrunch my hair and the gel breaks up leaving soft, shiny curls.
