What's wrong with my iphone?

My jailbroken/unlocked iphone spontaneously dropped service, help?

Has happened once before, but service came back within an hour. This is a practically brand new 8gb 1st gen iphone (i recently had my old model replaced due to dead pixels.) In order to isolate the problem I have tested my sim card in a different phone, received service there; also I have tried someone else's sim card (same carrier) in my phone and did not receive service, which leads me to believe it's either software or hardware on my iphone that is the issue.

in summary:

- 1st gen 8gb iphone
- jailbroken and unlocked
- tmobile is my carrier
- my sim card works in other phones
- other sim cards do not work in my phone
- wifi IS working
- 'no service' msg in top left and no Edge icon
- issue occurred once before, briefly, less than a month ago

i understand the next step would be to completely restore my phone which i will do, but wanted to make sure there isn't a possibly a simpler fix. also, if i continue not to receive service will it be a problem bringing the iphone in to the apple store without an at&t sim card? i figure there would be an at&t sim card there to prove it's an issue with the phone in order for me to receive a replacement.

Do a restore. This has happened to me in the past and I believe it was just a hiccup in the jailbreak. As for bringing the phone back... I'm unsure.

Try turning 'airplane mode' on and off. Possibly with a reboot between turning it on and off.

Response by poster: yeah i've definitely tried every possible reboot scenario, and settings reset to no avail. thanks for the responses though.

Have you tried just doing "Reset Network Settings" ?

This was recommended to me by Apple's phone support on the day after I bought my iPhone 3G. I had been switching in and out of Airplane Mode, as well as between Edge and 3G, and got it into a state where it would just not get on either network. Rebooting didn't help. Apple Phone Support Dude X recommended this, and it worked like a charm, and has worked each of the handful of subsequent times that it's happened, since.

Note, my iPhone is not jailbroken (though I hope to do this once stop being a wuss about it).

Good luck!
