Family friendly PS3 games

My girlfriend is in South America for the next few months. She is living in a house that is owned by her uncle who works for the Catholic Church. He has a wonderful HDTV and a PS3 sitting in his house but no games. Now he isn't there that often but her 14 year old cousin lives next door. What PS3 games would be appropriate for my girlfriend and her 14 year old female cousin that wouldn't create a potentially awkward scene if her Catholic Priest uncle found them?

Obviously GTA wouldn't work. I can't imagine a FPS working either. It has been a while since this question and this question were asked, so I am guessing the gaming choices have expanded dramatically since then.

Also, please keep the catholic priest jokes to a minimum as I'll probably forward this link to her. Thanks!

Best answer: Katamari Damacy is a PS2 game (I googled and they don't have it for PS3), but of course you can play it on a PS3. There's also a game you can download on the PS3 called Flow, http://www.us.playstation.com/flOw/.

I suck at 99% of video games, so I don't play them, but my boyfriend has a PS3. Those are the only two games I really know about, and they're both totally fine for kids, priests, etc.

Best answer: LEGO Batman
LEGO Indiana Jones

Make sure you get the right region encoding.

Best answer: Oh yeah, if you can play PS2 games on PS3 (I didn't know you could?), seconding the Katamari games. Also, Kingdom Hearts might appeal to them.

Best answer: What kinds of games do they like, and just how easily-offended is the uncle?

Guitar Hero III might be a good choice (though it's got some lyrical content and some battle-with-Satan stuff, but, hey, he's cool, right?). Hot Shots Golf, Burnout Paradise, Little Big Planet, sports games generally (I like Skate, but casual gamers and/or South Americans might prefer FIFA or Top Spin or something).

Best answer: Not all version of the PS3 will play PS2 games - and now that there is 2 versions with 80gb storage, there is even more confusion.

It depends on the model. Older ones can, newer ones can't.

I would say that LittleBigPlanet, PS3 Singstar (albeit with appropriate song packs), and maybe echochrome would all qualify.

Best answer: You don't mention what sorts of games either of them like? Are either of them gamers? Or are we recommending games for casual gamers? PS3 backwards compatibility can be a little flaky, depending on the game and which model of PS3 you have. Do you know which region PS3 he has?

I'm going to strongly second Lego Indiana Jones/Batman, and don't forget Lego Star Wars too. Great co-op games, fun for gamers and casual gamers alike.

Best answer: I'd be careful about PS2 on the PS3 - unless you know for sure the compatibility is there. There are so many models of PS3 out that differ in hard drive size and backwards compatibility.

Also, although the action sequences in Ratchet & Clank and the LEGO titles are tame by industry standards, they still carry an E10+ rating. You may need more info about the uncle to know if they're appropriate.

That being said, I'd recommend LittleBigPlanet, Buzz!, and Hot Shots Golf.

Not to mention the HDTV? Try some BLU-Ray movies!

Sorry about that. Neither are gamers. They just know they have this awesome potential sitting in front of them and want to play.

just how easily-offended is the uncle?

It's not that he is easily offended so much as he has dedicated his life to helping people who have been injured by the world's problems. So it could be pretty awkward if he comes home from dealing with the victims of the drug trade or the truly destitute to find his two nieces virtually killing people or stealing cars. I imagine it would be hard for him to be against his nieces beating Satan in any contest though. :)

Best answer: I was coming in to recommend Katamari Darmacy as well. It's inoffensive enough for the priest uncle, but bizarre enough for the cousin to think it's cool.

Best answer: You can check the Wikipedia pagefor PS3 to see which models can play PS2 games.

Nthing Little Big Planet, I've heard good things about Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (depending on his comfort level with the "witchcraft" thing), Guitar Hero/Rock Band are tons of fun, and I've never met anyone who didn't enjoy playing a Madden (football) game with friends.

Best answer: How about helpin' the girlfriend stay in shape with a little Dance Dance Revolution! Highly appropriate for the 14 year old girl and Uncle Catholic too.

Best answer: Portal (part of the Orange Box) has the highest rating in all recorded history in the market officially known as "chicks rokusan knows."

Best answer: Super Stardust HD. Plus anything under the 'Family Games' section of the Playstation Shop.

Best answer: Buzz TV. Jeopardy.

Best answer: Portal is totally amazing and highly recommended. But the Orange Box has Half Life 2, which could potentially be an issue. TF2 might be as well, as it's also an FPS.

Katamari is a great recommendation. You might ask them to check if there are any downloadable games that might work as well?

Best answer: Are any of the Star Wars games in PS3 format? I know of a Dutch priest who wouldn't be scandalized by having any of those games found in his living room. Father Roderick Vonhögen ran a popular Star Wars website before establishing a Catholic podcasting network. He regularly reviews Star Wars video games (and other video games) on his Daily Breakfast podcast.
