Sync Itunes Playlist to Ipod without copying music?

I have an Ipod Classic and Itunes 8.0. I have Itunes set up to manually sync music. I would like to create a Genius playlist on Itunes and copy it to my Ipod without recopying the music. Basically, just copy the play order. If I drag the Genius playlist to the Ipod icon, it copies the songs as well and I end up with duplicates on my Ipod.

I'm not interested in using alternate media managers such as Media Monkey because they don't play well with Itunes.

Do you have the new iPod Classic? Or the last version?

If you have the brand new one, just create the Genius playlist right on the iPod, instead of in iTunes, then, iTunes will sync it back to your computer when you plug in.

A better idea: create a genius playlist on your computer, then go in and find your songs on your iPod classic and create an On-The-Go playlist. Plug it back in, and rename the O-T-G playlist to match your Genius playlist.

Response by poster: I have the original Ipod Classic 80 GB - not the latest one.

Then I would go with the second part of my post.

Tedious, but it will work.

Yikes, I hope someone can come up with another idea. Thanks though!

do you have this problem with regular playlists? can you select all the songs in the Genius playlist and make a new playlist from selection (File menu), then drag that over? I've not had that problem with dragging a regular playlist over to the iPod; maybe a Genius one is just weird.
