Question: Nice but inexpensive/moderately priced lodging around Boston?

We're going to be visiting Boston for a few days, starting tomorrow (Sunday). We'd like to avoid traffic and parking issues by staying in the outskirts and taking mass-transit into downtown to see the sights.

We're looking for a hotel or motel that is pleasant, clean and fairly inexpensive (less than $125/night IF possible). Any recommendations?

A wonderful B/B in Cambridge. Variety of rooms, from tight little single beds w/ bath in hall, to large rooms. Right off Harvard Sq. Old-fashion and run in-house. Incredible value. They DO have parking spaces!! Pls. see http://www.cambridgeinns.com/irving/

or you can call: 877-547-4600

They are polite and extremely helpful.
Cheers

For that rate, aim for B&Bs and you'll get nicer rooms. I would try the Beacon Inn, but this late and that price is tough to match in Boston. You can also find a list of Boston College area hotels here, and I think that would be the best neighborhood to aim for ("outskirts & mass transit"). Further out in Cambridge would be nice and served by the T and bus, but I think it tends to be more expensive than the BC area. I can personally recommend The Harding House, The Irving House and The Mary Prentiss Inn in Cambridge (stayed at the last two, have toured the rooms at the first).

I live around the corner from the Irving house. It seems quite nice and an easy walk to the Red Line (although it just got cold around here, so bring a light coat). There's a parking lot full of zipcars across the street if you want to take a day trip somewhere.
