Some will recommend Joe on 13th St between University and 5th Ave, but I think the best is Grey Dog's Coffee, on University at 12th St.

Closer to Union Square.. MUD Coffee on 9th, you might see mobile MUD trucks throughout the area. They also have good food and music.

and Everyman Espresso on 13th between 3rd & 4th.

Depends upon your definition of "best". I'm a big fan of Dunkin Donuts coffee, so the location on 23rd at Lex would be my recommendation.

Ditto Joe's. Everyman Expresso is good enough but I prefer Joe's. The pastry shop on the corner of 17th and Bway, I think it's called Tisserie, is supposed to be good but I haven't tried it yet.

72 Irving Place, address self-explanatory, near the northeast corner of Union Square.

Tarallucci e Vino, on 18th st and Broadway.

I like Blue Dog: 25th just west of 6th. But that is a pretty big area you are covering.

Seconding Tarallucci e Vino. Divine brew, and drinking coffee at the bar is wonderful, wonderful.

I'm a fan of the Mud truck and the coffee at Le Pain Quotidien (East 19th Street between Park and Broadway) is quite tasty.

Response by poster: Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try them out. Slipped my mind when asking, but I'd also recommend Bar Milano on 3rd & 24th -- a nice, college-kid-free spot for a well made espresso.

Not exactly where you asked, but worth the walk:

Joe--there's a branch on 23rd and 9th
Cafe Grumpy--20th between 7th and 8th
Ninth Street Espresso in the Chelsea Market--15th/16th St, 9th/10th Aves
