How did Wednesday become food and coupon day for USAian newspapers? Even though I've traveled to other parts of the world, I've never paid attention to the phenomenon there. Does this occur in your country as well?

I always associate coupons with the Sunday paper. My Minneapolis paper advertises on the front page "$192 dollars in savings!"

At a thrift store I frequent, Wednesday is senior discount day. I heard this is because their social security checks arrive around that time and this is an incentive to get them to shop there. It could work with store coupons too, I imagine

The 2008 Social Security Benefits calendar could support this hypothesis. Anyone who received benefits after 1997 gets their check on either the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month.

Usually Thursday for our local paper is the biggest insert day. One reason for them to be bunched up is the expense of inserts in the printing and press process. Another is for grouping inserts with a particular newspaper section, like Food or Living.

But Sunday is the big day for national-brand inserts, which are mostly handled by three major companies. You can even plan in advance when you'll be getting them.
