Uke got mail

I need a clever name for my ukulele cover band

Help me find a funny, silly, (dare I say it) ironic, name for my ukulele cover band. We're going to do cover versions of metal and hip hop and punk songs. To get an idea of what we're about, imagine a bunch of guys/gals on stage doing Motorhead, Ramones, Public Enemy and Joy Division songs on the ukulele.

If you could somehow work in the ukulele or hawaiian aspect into the name, that would be mucho awesome.

The Plucky Johnsons

Pluck You
Pluck Off

Jumping Fleas of Death (Or Doom) (ukulele apparently translates to jumping flea, but that might be too obscure)

One for All, All Four-Strings

The Dark Side of the Four-String (perfect in some ways, but I don't think it reads too well)

Weapons of Minor Destruction

Uke-lear Power
Uke-lear Reaction

I see absolutely no reason why you shouldn't just adopt Sonic Uke, as suggested above.

I suppose if you are from greater NYC, you might consider The Asbury Ukes.
posted by Clyde Mnestra at 3:37 PM on September 1, 2008

If it matters, Sonic Uke and The Re-Entrants are taken. Probably some of these others are too. There are more ironic ukulele cover bands out there than one might expect.

Which is not to say you shouldn't carry on, though. Not at all.

I see Uke Umber has already been suggested.

BitterOldPunk, even though Sonic Uke was taken, "Uke of Today" proves that you have the touch. I vote for Uke of Today. It's got the punk cred for those in the know, but it also has a certain grandiosity.

Utilizing the same pun, but more strident: Uke Brigade.
posted by Beardman at 9:41 PM on September 1, 2008

Or, breaking from the puns, you could get the "Pacific Islands + menace" effect by calling yourselves Bikini Atoll.

I didn't get what the clamor over "Sonic Uke" was about until the "Uke of Today" clamor came afterwards. Even though the former has been struck from the list, I guess that's one of those names that sounds more effective out loud than how it reads.

But yeah, you might have to stay away from names that need to repeated over and over before dopes like me finally go, "Ohhhh."
