Here's an account from someone who was imprisoned as a POW in Vietnam for two years longer than McCain. posted by jayder at 5:20 PM on August 24, 2008 [3 favorites]
Just curious, what claims regarding his time as a POW do you find "un-credible"? I wasn't aware of any controversy around the accounts of that period of his life, only ones about how his POW status is used these days.
Actually curious, not trying to stir any pots. posted by Aquaman at 5:48 PM on August 24, 2008
He started telling a "cross in the dirt" story a few years back that may have been lifted from an anecdote poularized by Chuck Colson. I've also heard that the details of his suicide attempt vary greatly between different tellings, FWIW. posted by designbot at 6:13 PM on August 24, 2008
Aquaman: Andrew Sullivan has made an issue out of it. Do some googling. posted by Jaltcoh at 6:31 PM on August 24, 2008
Specifically the credibility of McCain's story about one of the guards drawing a cross in the sand on Christmas to signal that they were both Christians. posted by Jaltcoh at 6:32 PM on August 24, 2008
Ah, new political stuff. Thanks for the updates. posted by Aquaman at 6:38 PM on August 24, 2008
From religion class when I was in grade school.. stories about drawing crosses and the fish symbol in the dirt, as a secret way of communicating that one was a Christian, are said to have dated back to its earliest years. I don't know if that is historical truth or just legend, but I think it's possible it's been passed on so long that it would be put into practice. Too tired right now to do much research on that I'm afraid. I don't think there's any way whatsoever to verify McCain's story. I personally think he tells it as a means of pandering but I also tend to think it isn't a good plan to make a lot of accusations about it. posted by citron at 9:00 PM on August 24, 2008
